Gutter Cleaning

When to Clean Gutters in Mississippi (Fall vs Spring)

3 min read

Ask someone when to clean gutters and most people say fall. They're not wrong, but they're only half right. In Mississippi, spring drops almost as much debris into your gutters as fall does, and the homes that stay out of trouble are the ones that get cleaned in both seasons.

Here's what each season actually puts in your gutters, when to schedule each cleaning, and how to tell if your house needs more than the standard twice a year.

What fall drops in your gutters

Fall is the famous one for a reason. In DeSoto County, leaves start falling in October and keep coming into December, with oaks hanging on the longest. By the time the last leaves drop, a typical gutter is holding a mix of oak leaves, acorns, pine needles, and small twigs.

Acorns deserve a special mention. They roll along the gutter and pile up right at the downspout opening, which is the worst possible spot. A gutter can be half full of leaves and still drain, but one acorn jam at the elbow blocks the whole run.

The right fall timing

The most common mistake is cleaning too early. If you clean in early October, the oaks will refill everything by Thanksgiving. For most DeSoto County homes, the sweet spot is November through early December, after the bulk of the leaves are down but before the winter rains settle in.

If you have big oaks hanging over the roof, a quick second pass in January is worth it. Those last stubborn leaves plus winter rain make a heavy, soggy mat.

What spring drops in your gutters

Spring debris doesn't look like much from the ground, so it gets skipped. That's a mistake. In March and April, oaks drop long tassels and the whole county gets coated in yellow pollen. When that pollen and those tassels get wet inside your gutter, they pack down into a thick sludge that holds water.

Standing water is the real problem. It breeds mosquitoes all summer, adds weight that bends gutter hangers, and keeps the fascia board behind the gutter damp until it starts to rot.

The right spring timing

Late April through May is the window. By then the pollen wave has passed and the tassels are down, so one cleaning clears the whole spring mess before summer storm season arrives.

Summer storms are the wild card. Strong thunderstorms strip green leaves and small branches, so after any major storm, take a slow walk around the house and look up. Leaves sticking up over the gutter edge or water spilling over during the next rain means it's time, no matter what the calendar says.

Fall vs spring: which matters more?

If you could only pick one, fall wins, because the sheer volume of leaves is higher and a clogged gutter in winter sits wet for months. But skipping spring is how you end up with mosquito nurseries and rotted fascia by August. The honest answer is that they're a pair: fall handles the leaves, spring handles the sludge.

We go deeper on the full yearly schedule in how often to clean gutters in DeSoto County.

Homes that need more than twice a year

  • Big oaks or pines hanging over the roofline
  • A roof that collects debris in valleys before it washes into the gutters
  • Gutter guards, which still need the top surface cleared
  • Lots of storm exposure on open lots

If two or three of those describe your place, plan on three cleanings a year: late fall, midwinter, and late spring.

A simple Mississippi gutter schedule

  • November to early December: the big fall clean-out
  • January: second pass for homes with heavy oaks
  • Late April to May: spring pollen and tassel clean-out
  • After any major storm: a look from the ground
